Home life - Part I

This section will be to do with how Japanese homes look. Even the simplest of things, such as doors and sitting down to dinner, are much different to those in Western countries.

The entrance

The first thing that is different of a Japanese household is the entrance. You are met with a small area before a step into the normal floor of the home. This is known as the genkan.

This is where you have to remove your shoes, placing them up against the step (not on the step itself), the front of the shoes pointing outwards towards the door. Slippers are provided for guests, but if you reside in that household, then you will most likely have a pair of your own. You would wear these slippers all through the house except when entering the toilet where you would change slippers yet again, changing out of them when you leave the toilet. Upon leaving the house, you would remove your slippers on the step and put on your shoes in the genkan.
